A well balanced diet which is low in fat and contains ample source of vitamin B12 and foliate will help to protect the nervous system. Getting plenty of rest (8 hours per night), not smoking or using other tobacco products, engaging aerobic and anaerobic exercise and practicing stress reduction strategies will also beneficially affect memory. Alcohol consumption should be strictly limited and illegal drugs should not be used.
The following 5 strategies have been proven beneficial in preventing loss of memory.
This refers to a loss of the every day sense of memory responsible for knowing facts, events, information and experiences. Loss of memory is also called “Amnesic Syndrome”. People with amnesia typically are lucid and maintain sense of self but they face severs difficulties in learning new information and forming new memories. They may not be able to recall memories of past experiences and information.
Memory involves several different functions of the brain. Most studies of the brain divide memory into two kinds, Declarative and procedural. The declarative involves strong facts and the procedural involves skills and habits.
There are at least three general types of amnesia.
1.	Anterograde: This type of amnesia follows brain trauma and characterized the inability to remember new information.
2.	Retrograde: This form of amnesia is opposite of anterograde amnesia, the victim can recall events that occurred after a trauma but can not remember previously familiar information.
3.	Transient Global Amnesia: This type of amnesia has no consistently identifiable cause but researchers have suggested that migraines or ischemic attacks may be the trigger.

Childhood or infantile amnesia refers to person’s inability to remember specific events from childhood and infancy, typically prior to the age of four. Famed psychoanalyst sigmund freud believed that childhood amnesia was a response to sexual repression. It has been hypothesized that memories need to be stored conceptually and associated with words and meanings that people don’t attain until about the age of four. It is also possible that young child’s brain does not have sufficient development to properly store memories.
Infant and childhood stress have been linked to memory decline at an early age. A 2005 study by the UC Irvine School of Medicine suggests that associated with parental loss, abuse or neglect may contribute to the type of memory loss during middle age years.

Causes of Memory loss:
1.	Alcohol abuse
2.	Alzheimer’s disease
3.	Brain Tumor
4.	Dementia
5.	Depression
6.	Drug Abuse
7.	Encephalitis & meningitis
8.	Epilepsy
9.	Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV)
10.	Parkinson’s Disease
11.	Stroke
12.	Lowy body disease
13.	Malnutrition
14.	Sleep disorders
15.	Vitamin Deficiencies
16.	Stress and anxiety. etc

It was perhaps in the middle of the year 2001. I was working as a Senior Executive Head of an ADB assisted Development project in the Regional Office at Chittagong, the second largest port city of Bangladesh. One fine morning a gentleman knocked at my office chamber and introduced himself as a Junior Marketing Executive of a prestigious Foreign Multinational Bank located at Chittagong. He started Explaining about Credit Cards and persuaded me to possess a credit card from his Bank. He offered me to fill form and signed it. Within a week I received a mail from the Bank containing Credit Card. I was amazed and delighted. I started utilizing the facilities and enjoyed using ATM in my country for the first time. I felt myself dignified and honored when I used the card for Shopping and sometimes dinning in Chinese restaurant with my family. At that time use of credit card was not so widened as of today.

I used Master Card of Barclays’ Bank in England in1978 for about 13 months while I was undergoing a study. But in Bangladesh ATM and Credit/Debit card was introduced in late Nineties in only one or two Banks.
The Bank issued the computerized bill on 10th day of every month mentioning the balance payable and the minimum amount due for payment on 25th day of the same month. I tried my best to make the payment within due date. However some time I deferred payment within due date and paid penalty because I used to spend about 10 to 15 days outside my station on official tour. I was also surprised when I found that I was not allowed 45 days interest free opportunity against some credit purchase. When I contacted the Credit Card Division I was requested to please go through the terms and conditions of the Credit Card. A page containing the terms and condition printed on the brochure in small font that I never tried to read it. I talked with some of my colleagues about the issue and they simply laughed. When I read it, some confusion appeared in my mind. However I personally called on the Bank Official and discussed the matter with them. I came to know that if I purchase one day before the Billing date, i.e. 9th day of the month, I can only get 15 days interest free facility(up to 25th day of the same month). I then realized that I made a fool myself for not going thoroughly into the terms and conditions and for this reason I paid penal rate of interest on many occasion. From then on I made most of the credit purchases immediately after the Billing date, i.e. 10th evening or on 11th day of the month and continued to do so and enjoyed almost 42 to 45 days interest free loan. The card enabled me to replace almost all my old necessary household commodities including Electronic and furniture’s. Most of all I felt secured, because I did not have to carry cash with risk.

There are many forces acting on forest, collectively and individually, and the trends of these are not easily understood. Ecologists analyzed 152 cases of tropical deforestation and arrived at four causes of deforestation:
1.	Agricultural expansion
2.	Over- extraction
3.	Infrastructure development
4.	Bio-physical factors – land characteristics, fires, drought, floods, pests, and social events e.g. war, revolution, social disorder, abrupt policy shifts, economic shocks etc.

Ecologists categorized the causes of deforestation into two groups:
1.	Greed and the relentless pursuit of economic growth and
2. population growth

In Bangladesh the major factors of deforestation are:
•	Population Explosion
•	Settlement and Urbanization and
•	Management Practices.

Population Explosion:

The Population density of Bangladesh is 1066.30 per km [World Fact book July 2008, web site: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/bg.html] which is one of the highest in the world. In 1947, the density was only 306 per km and the demand for forest produces as well land for settlement was very little. In 1971, the density increased by 67 percent. At present, the density is 1066.30 per km and compared to the 1947 baseline, the demand for forest products as well as land for settlement increased by 189 percent. So, the Population Explosion is the single mast important factor for destruction of forests. Unequal distribution of resources among the population is also contributing to the destruction of forests.

Settlement and Urbanization:

The population growth is 2.022 ( 2008 est) percent per annum. Fro that, we need land to feed, homes to live, schools to education, hospitals to provide health services, etc. Only available land in this land-hungry country is the forestland. On the other hand, industrialization is also emerging at a rapid pace and engulfing our land.

Management Practices:

In the decade of the eighties, in order to meet the huge demand of forest products, the forest Department adopted a forest management called ‘clear felling with artificial regeneration,’ which later on proved to be very detrimental to the tropical rain forest management. At that time, it was also recommended by the development partners like the World Bank. Following this system, the forest was cleared by burning all vegetation’s and replanted with only one or two commercially important species. This way the rich biodiversity of tropical rain forests was destroyed as well as this exposed the forests to erosion through the monsoon torrential rain. This opening of forests also tempted some people to encroach the forests.

Despite of all the warnings against this habit from friends Famiy, newspaper and TV, it had never occurred to quit him smoking. Actually he never cared about all the warnings. However,Things changed, after an encounter from his little grand daughter. One day, while he was smoking in front of her( Parsa), and my brother cuddleing Parsa and kissed her on her cheek. Instead of being the cuddleing she gave my brother a very stern look and said “grand father ,I don’t like the smell, Why do you smoke? Can’t you quit the habit?”

My elder brother was flabbergasted. A lot of people, including his friends and family members have tried their best to get me to quit smoking, but he was hardly ever bothered.

However, after this incident, he think he will try to kick the bad habit. Finally, He quit smoking.

To those who smoke, I would like to requet you to quit as well. If you can’t, at least try not to smoke in front of children.
